‘Societal, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of Knowledge Societies’


The chair has started its activities from the participation in the II International Scientific Forum ‘Stepping into the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy’ that was held on December 2018 and organised by the State University of Management with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, under the auspices of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO and in partnership with the Association of BRICS Countries Business Schools. The SUM UNESCO Chair and TASS Information Agency held an international session ‘Societal and Ethical Challenges of the Digital Age’ and an international round table ‘Overcoming Digital Inequality: Prospects for Digital Volunteering Development’.

Digital Volunteering

In November 2018, one of the chair key activities was laid – digital volunteering development. Volunteers will work on solving the issues of digital inequality, access to information, media education, and positive content spread. The project on creation of the International Center for Digital Volunteering Development involves the creation of aplatform that will unite volunteers and non-profit organisations that carry out their Internet voluntary activities. The platform will help in training, research conducting, experience exchanging, and finding new volunteers.

Creation of the SUM UNESCO Chair

The initiative of opening the SUM UNESCO Chair ‘Societal, Legal and Ethical Frameworking of Knowledge Societies’ was approved by the UNESCO Secretariat in November 2018, and on January 25, 2019 the official agreement between the State University of Management and the UNESCO Secretariat was signed. Under the guidance of the SUM rector Ivan Lobanov the UNESCO Chair will help students and teachers to participate in educational, scientific and cultural programmes, attract expert community to the university in accordance with the objectives of the UNESCO Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021:

  • Strategic objective 2:

    Empowering learners to be creative and responsible global citizens.

  • Strategic objective 4:

    Strengthening science, technology and innovation systems and policies – nationally, regionally and globally.

  • Strategic objective 9:

    Promoting freedom of expression, media development and access to information and knowledge.
